Our Laboratory

Biomarker and genomic testing for research partners

Our New Haven laboratory supports research and biopharmaceutical partners with microRNA profiling, APOE genotyping, and protein biomarker analyses. The laboratory is CLIA-certified and CAP-accredited and holds a New York State clinical laboratory permit, a Connecticut clinical laboratory license, and permits or licenses in Maryland, California, and Pennsylvania.

Our collaborative services

Biomarker profiling

Integrated testing

Combined genetic, protein, and microRNA testing from a single sample set.

Explore biomarker targets
  • Amyloid-β 42/40 ratio (Aβ42/Aβ40) – a lower ratio reflects brain amyloid deposition; the classic CSF marker, now measured in plasma
  • Phosphorylated tau 217 (p-tau217) – currently the strongest single blood marker of amyloid and tau pathology; basis of the first FDA-cleared blood tests.
  • Phosphorylated tau 181 (p-tau181) – earlier-generation p-tau marker, often used to resolve p-tau217 "gray zone" results.
  • Phosphorylated tau 231 (p-tau231) – rises very early, potentially in the preclinical stage.
  • Total tau (t-tau) – general marker of neuronal injury, mainly in CSF.
  • Glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) – astrocyte activation marker; elevated early in amyloid-positive individuals.
  • Neurofilament light chain (NfL) – nonspecific marker of axonal damage and neurodegeneration rate.
  • Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) protein / ApoE4 isoform – the major genetic risk factor; the protein itself is measurable in plasma.
  • Neurogranin – synaptic (postsynaptic) protein; elevated in CSF with synaptic loss.
  • SNAP-25 – presynaptic protein marking synaptic degeneration.
  • YKL-40 (chitinase-3-like protein 1) – glial/neuroinflammation marker.
  • sTREM2 (soluble TREM2) – microglial activation marker.
  • Brain-derived tau (BD-tau) – a newer blood marker of AD-specific neurodegeneration, more specific than NfL.
  • Microtubule-binding region tau (MTBR-tau243) – tracks tau tangle burden and clinical stage.
  • α-Synuclein and TDP-43 – co-pathology markers used to distinguish or identify mixed dementias alongside AD.
